Can I update straight to latest 1.8 without doing the ones in between?

As you are so far behind, I would recommend you do a step wise update using available firmware downloads.

1.5, 1.6, 1.7...do you have all those FW versions?...There is a certain amount of brick risk in doing FW updates. I'd recommend just do the 1.8 update if you absolutely need what's been added since 1.4...I updated to 1.8 direct from 1.4 because of the added bind encryption. Some GO app settings got reset to default. The bird seems more twitchy in wind gust as before it's just parked in the sky.

I updated from 1.4 to 1.8 and it was fine.
Have written a detailed checklist for the procedure as it is NOT intuitive..
