Want a shorter USB cord

You want a 300mm (12 in) Lightning cable for iPads. This is the ideal length. I have these by Anker from Amazon.

Apple makes a .5 meter cord. Just abut perfect, IMO

For the iPad Air and Mini, the 12" (300mm) cable is the shortest you will get away with. There is almost no slack with mine.

You are right, the 6" is too short....



But it's close could maybe do an 8" but they don't come in that size, ordered a 12" from amazon.
