That's also a decision made by the FAA in your particular case. As you said, most people are supposed to use the portal, and if you're smart, you can get a waiver to fly anytime with no notice, although I hear filing a NOTAM is a wise endeavor.- EDDSkitz

Slave remote calibration
I would just try to plug the tablet into the remote, as that's how they update, not wirelessly. Most likely don't need to switch it.- EDDSkitz
