My local park is just on the boundary of the 5-mile radius mark from an airport. It is a great place to fly as it has a large field and it quite open.

The way I understand it every time I would want to fly in this park I would have to apply for a waiver at Request a Waiver/Airspace Authorization – Small Unmanned Aircraft System (sUAS). Problem is, waivers are not instant so I would not call this recreational flying.

I called my local tower ATC and they were really nice but advised me to use the online portal for "notification" and "approval"

So do I have to find a spot to fly my drone (Hobby) that is in class G airspace?

I find it hard to believe based on the footage I am seeing on youtube that every pilot has received ATC clearance to fly in the area their flying.

I know the system will be automated sometime in 2018 to facilitate drone operations near airports and in controlled airspace. My question is what do we do in the mean time.
