Errr...but what are you trying to shield against?

The IMU (not the compass) contains accelerometers and solid-state gyros. These rely on gravity. If you're trying to shield against electro-magnetic interference (EMI), you need Mu metal. If you're trying to shield against radio frequency interference (RFI) you need a Faraday screen.

As it is, given that the lead shield is not grounded and lead is not ferromagnetic it's not acting as any kind of EMI or RFI shield. It might shield against some low energy gamma rays but the shielding is not very thick. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lead_shielding

Just when you think your pockets of knowledge are deep, you find you have short arms. :)

Please remember that your pets have day-to-day knowledge of your activities, and they're just as vulnerable to government or alien mind probes. Be sure to protect them appropriately! :):):)

RE: the original post, I could potentially see adding weight to the craft during the IMU calibration if there were environmental vibrations that were hard to eliminate. By increasing the mass of the aircraft, environmental variables might have a reduced effect, similar to weighing down a tripod with a sandbag hung from the center column for stability. Dunno. Could also us a sand table, foam pads, etc. I doubt if the IMU is vulnerable to radiation that would be stopped by lead shielding, but maybe.

I hear that an aluminum foil cod-piece is both useful and quite a fashion statement....but I'm not quite sure what it is stating....
