Near Mid-Air Collisions With Drones

The most effective long-term answer is to build dual-band ADS-B (1090ES and UAT) receivers into drone autopilots and have them warn the pilot - or even automatically evade - when confronted with converging traffic. Most jet and turboprop aircraft carry 1090ES Out (transmitters) today and a lot of GA will be carrying either 1090ES or UAT Out within 5 years. If the FAA had any sense they'd find a way to allow low-cost ADS-B Out for drones, gliders, balloons, etc, (so the big aircraft could "see" the drones too, not just the other way around) but today the regulations make it way too expensive, heavy and/or power hungry to equip ADS-B transmitters on many types of flying machines that could benefit.
