Remote for Parachute System:
Arguably the most important safety and emergency recovery system available for a DJI Inspire 1, is the Opale Paramodels Parachute, specifically designed and built for the DJI Inspire 1. While there are a number of single points of failure in the DJI Inspire 1 (for instance battery, motor or other avionics-related failure), the parachute is an entirely independent system capable of reducing the Inspire 1’s sink rate and impact energy to a level at which risk to damage to people or property are as low as reasonably possible. For comparison, a 3.5kg drone falling out of the sky with no parachute fitted will have a sink rate of 50m/s and impact energy of 12,500 Joules; for a 3.5kg drone fitted with this particular parachute, the sink rate is reduced to 5.6m/s and the impact energy is reduced to only 54.9 Joules.
These figures imply a 9x decrease in sink rate and a 228x decrease in impact energy if the parachute is deployed.
Due to the parachute ejection system’s optimised aerodynamics and low mass (which keeps the aircraft below its maximum take off weight), it does not change the flight characteristics of the Inspire 1. The parachute ejection system is powered by its own battery which enables the parachute to deploy even in the event of complete aircraft flight battery failure, and the maximum effective transmission range from the parachute’s remote controller is 2.5km. As the total mass of the DJI Inspire 1 with parachute ejection system fitted is less than 4kg, this system is able to be homologated for S3 (French Civil Aviation Authority UAV regulation). For safety reasons the parachute ejection system does not use any pyrotechnical elements or gas; instead a compressed spring is used.
