Question about Contract Work

Here's the situation. I have been laid off from the company where I was the drone pilot. They have since received requests for missions and asked me if I would be available to complete these as a sub-contractor, not employee, using their equipment.

I have questions and concerns on how insurance works. What does their insurance cover? Am I at risk without my own? What else should I consider before going any further with this?

Any thoughts or insights would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Barney

Good questions! All I do is sub-contract work (1099) and have my own insurance.
If you're using their equipment you still might need to be insured yourself. In fact, you may need to make sure their equipment would be covered due to pilot error.
Do you not own your own equipment? If so, why not use your own?

I do not have my own drone. I agree with your thought about their insurance, that would be up to them to check on.

So, for my insurance, would I just need liability? I believe there are options out there for a one time mission coverage. Can you just get liability? I'll have to research the cost of that.

So my quote to them would be my hourly rate plus my cost of insurance.

Gets more complicated because I will have to go there to charge and do all the prefly prep prior to the mission itself.

Maybe this will give them the reason to hire me back :)

There are different plans out there. You will definitely need liability coverage that protects you should you cause damage to property. But,. I would also check to get additional coverage for the equipment you're using. You could wind up paying for the drone replacement if you crash.
