Rumor: DJI and Black Magic are working on a camera for the Inspire

What I think is funny is how many people bought an inspire thinking the video would be great or simply ignoring everyone that said it wasn't that great, it's like you guys expect cinema quality footage in a turnkey package that was $3k :/

It's great for what it accomplishes....if you need to fly a blackmagic there are plenty of ways to go about that rather than sitting on your hands waiting/hoping dji caters to you

I bought the Inspire knowing the quality of the camera and I'm happy with it for what it is. I think it's a great machine for the price and I'm looking forward to investing in upgrading the camera and getting better quality files.

The included camera makes awful pictures due to the small sensor. Its a 100% sensor problem otherwise it would be acceptable. There are no other cameras with such a small sensor making better pics, they all have the same problem.

The video is surprisingly good as long as it doesnt move too much but this is the 30p limitation. A new camera should have 50/60p that will solve most video problems.

The i1 has 1080p 60fps already. Biggest problem for me is the compression. Detail in dense foilage is lost due to compression and makes it seem like the lens is soft in patchy areas of the frame

I find it surprising that so many people here are opposed to a new camera offering for the inspire. Frankly I don't think the camera it currently has is all that great. A significantly improved camera option on a bird as advanced at the inspire would really push it into a whole new realm for professional aerial photographers and videographers who don't want to fly a 20k red camera. Having a high end camera option available will only increase the value of the inspire 1 and couldn't hurt it in any way. If you don't want it then don't buy it. Why discourage options and innovation?

the camera that comes with the inspire 1 is fine. sure there are some things that could make it better like longer ex-poser times past 8 seconds would be nice but that's a software thing. you can shoot in raw, so anything you capture can be tweaked with just about any editing software out there to get the effect you want. show me someone on here who has a legit gripe the dji camera doesn't do everything they want and odds are they have a 15000 dollar platform they use when it doesn't.

Derrr, very grown up, the horizon issue in not present on every shot, it's very intermittent so good luck adjusting for a intermittent issue.

I agree the prices are high. They are not inverted colours. They are special cameras for agriculture monitoring using the IR band. The colours represent the amount of chlorophyll in the plant which indicates if the plant is under stress and needs appropriate action to be taken by the farmer to correct. The colours represent the NDVI. (Normalised Differential Vegetation Index). It's a very specialised use of IR.

Back to the cost. It does sound a lot. They have either replaced the built in IR cut filter next to the sensor with a IR pass filter or even removed the cut filter and coated the lens instead. Coating technology is expensive. Taking the camera apart might also be time consuming. Some cameras are harder to take apart and rebuild. I have not done it with the Inspire camera only GoPros and Canon.

Cost is relative to value. If it's possible to increase the yield of crop by say 15% by remedial treatment by sensing the NDVI value then the price is worth it. It's also worth it to offer this service to farmers and a great business opportunity for UAV operators.

The i1 has 1080p 60fps already. Biggest problem for me is the compression.

I am only using 4K and here the biggest problem is the 30p which can only make very slow movements. Even on normal screens 4K looks much better then Full HD which is one of the reasons I bought it. However its true that compression is too much 4K should be recorded at 100 Mbit not 60. They also should include a 64GB SD-Card since the price difference is little.

This would be very interesting (and exciting) if it actually comes to light, although originally i believed the Inspire would be a platform with future upgrades, now getting to know what DJI are like they will just be working on an i2. The i1 is the most enjoyable flying platform I have used, far more so than when using an s900 and despite the cameras weaknesses I am still able to get fantastic footage and images (but I wouldnt say no to a better sensor and better compression). There are only 2 pros with the s900 for me, one is redundancy if a motor died, and also the fact it can carry the gh4, but if the i1 really does get the upgrade it deserves using an m43 sensor that can compete with the gh4, then I would think about getting another hexcopter to carry an a7r mk2. The future is exciting for this technology.

I own a couple of Blackmagic Pocket cameras and would love to see Blackmagic work with DJI. The current Inspire camera is OK (lots of playing in settings though), but is highly compressed. If we could get CinemaDNG Raw, that would be dandy in my opinion.

I also have a bmpcc and shooting raw and having 15 or so stops of latitude on an inspire would be great. Maybe Dji will change the compression scheme too so that annoying flickering will be squashed

One of the biggest selling points was the removable camera/gimbal.

DJI's core competency is in mass production of battery operated UAVs. NOT cameras. I would spend north of $2k for a quality camera system. The workflow starts with the camera.

I hope black magic can muster something up before the end of the year.

I personally would LOVE an optical zoom like the Aeryon Scout and a better sensor, 12 mp stills are the same as my old vision plus.

The camera that comes with the Inspire is great for the price point. But the Inspire has an upgradeable system in the form of a replaceable camera. It was designed to be modular, so there is nothing wrong with looking forward to a much improved third party camera and recording system.

Asking an awful lot of a little ball cam on a 2900 drone. If I need higher quality I will stap on a Red Epic On my Octo. Then everybody happy!

Mounting such large cameras to get quality will become a thing of the past. There is already the Alexa Mini, and Blackmagics' new Micro Cinema Camera looks great and is extremely small and light. They do a Micro Studio camera with a 4K chip in the same base body too (though needs separate recording. It is perfectly conceivable that they are working on a 4K version with built in recording for the Inspire. Although any doubts I have are due to an interview with the owner of DJI where he said he wanted to do everything in house.
