What is your preference: an ND 8 or 16 filter ?

Sorry I didn't realized the camera has outside thread . Regular filter usually has the same thread on each side ,one is inside and another one is outside one. I thing this one has diferante inside, because of the vigneting reason(usualy used on thicker filters. The only way to instal the filter is a step ring ( it will add prox. 1 gram of weight ),or to make special adapter.

---no need to apologize, Paul. We're all learning. I'm trying to figure out this filter thing too. On forums I like to picture us talking in the hallway at work to each other..or around a table. In these situations we don't *usually* speak with exclamation points and come off annoyed like "you just don't get it", or "I already said that!!!!".
Typically I don't feel this on this forum, but it does happen. I'm following a few threads (including this one) where people need to take it down a notch or two. o_O

A promised to inform: our factory already can produce nd-filters down to 5 grams. Today we sent one of the DJI to let analyze and get as close as possible to 3 grams and to check the thread.

Keep you informed !
Yes, I'm very interested. Thank you!

NEWS !
3 grams is reached !
We are dealing with 2 factories in China (we live in China).
One factory confirmed the weight and quality. Only the thread needs to be tested by myself. They send us today an ND -3,-4,-5 with 2 different threads and possibility to stack. If the threads are not adapted to the DJI-camera, they can make special frame with the right thread, BUT, there will be a minimum (reasonable) order for that. If need for an -6 the minimum order will be much higher (>1000) what I find personally not worth. A stacking gives possibilities of -7, -8 and -9. Not bad for 6 grams in this case !
Still waiting for answer of the second factory that received our DJI-sample.

Keep you informed, Renaat

Hi fellows,
today I received 3 different ND-filters of the same factory, conclusions:
- 5 grams, even they told me 3 (that is China, grrrr), sure due to the extra external thread
- quality is OK
- thread is not right, what I expected, but they can make same thread as DJI with a minimum order, no problem
- no ND-6 at this factory (or need big volume > 1000)

so: I will send these back and wait for the results of the other factory that still not received my clear DJI filter. As this factory will "see" the one to copy, I am more confident in the results. More, this factory is much bigger as the first one and are highly qualified specialist in filters.

After seeing video results of the Inspire and personal experience with, I really feel the necessity of these stronger ND-filters to get better results at settings sharp 0, contrast -2, saturation -1 in log. Stronger ND will smooth the sharpness, flicker and other artifacts.
Anyone who knows the native ISO of the camera ?

Keep you informed, Renaat.

Interested to see what you come up with. I would certainly love a set of -3, -4, -5 stop NDs, with a -6/-8 stop ideal but expensive, as you noted.
Thread size is critical, since it would be easy to strip the plastic threads on the Inspire camera. Stacking filters is not ideal, since it will most likely result in vignetting. The gimbal seems not to be as affected by weight as the P2/H3-3D, but a single -6/-8 stop ND at < 5g would be worth paying for, if at all reasonable in price.
Native ISO, as best as I can tell from cursory research is 100-1600. Digital boost to 3200.

Thanks for your efforts, Renaat.

the native ISO of the camera must be 100, as most of dslr camera, the iso with the less noise, extremely in opposite with a camera as the sony A7s that has a 3200 native iso or the sony FS7 with 2000. Conclusion: only one iso to use = 100 for the highest dynamic range with less noise

I found a good solution : Tiffen has gel filters ( also ND ) , you can cut it out to a nice round filter and add it to the existing inspire filter , so you'll have a double ND filter which would bring your exposure with about 6 to 8 stops depending on which ND gel filter you can get. in this way you can keep the iso at 100 and the shutter speed on 1/50th ( in case of 24fps) . the gel filters from Tiffen are high quality and i did not find any loss in image quality !

Can you link to a source and tell us the ND strength that you have had success with? Thanks a lot

Still waiting reply from factory for the frame. This is the biggest issue. As we bought 3 ND-filters from another factory, but with the wrong threats and too heavy, I took the resin out of the filter and weighted : 1 gr.
So the frame factory needs to produce a frame of 2-3 gr. For the moment, I will "add" the new filter and insert with the stock filter on the camera and see the result when having time to fly. Enough threat space to add my second ND filters.
Test to do: ND 2 of stock + ND8,16,32 (I took out of the too heavy ones)
Some patience with the chinese …. you already learned it with DJI, ;)

with the Tiffen 0.9 ( no grams ) gives me 3 stops and if in use together with the existing 2 stop nd from inspire i have now the choice between 2 , 3 or 5 stops ..

I'm curious if this ended up working???
Sorry to not follow up. Ya, B&H explained that they have tried many options to make it happen and haven't found a solution. They have an aerial dept. now, which is rad. The guy knew all about the Inspire, and knows we all want something. Long story is that I have temporarily given up, and am waiting to hear something new. :(
