I was curious, is there anything harmful about using a drone to inspect power lines, transformers, switches, etc.? I have been within 3 feet of such equipment with no issues, but was curious if anything impacts the drone's performance other than physical contact. Thanks!

You might lose GPS but usually not control signal. So it is wise to practice ATTI mode a lot and at your location during some part of your mission prior to getting close to activated transmission gear. Be aware of wind currents and if at all possible move towards equipment while flying into the wind. That way if your bird suddenly goes into ATTI mode you will not be pushed into the equipment. It would be essential to work with the authority of the power company as if your equipment causes and outage, then you would not be responsible for lost revenue as a result of your machine causing a power outage. Electric Power Research Institute has performed studies on this subject and have written papers, but a bit costly for non members to access the reports.
