Hello Rodger That. I think you are mixing up the X3 and the Z3. They look very much alike and the Z3 is the ones that has the ability to zoom in and out. The X3 is the original camera that was shipped on the Inspire 1. Many people then upgraded to the X5 / X5R cameras and just set the X3 aside - which is one reason they pop up for sale from time to time. Also, there is a pretty significant price difference between the X3 and the Z3.
I bought this as a just in case something happened and never used it.
