Hey doods!
So, it looks like I let my 107 lapse in Feb. My bad. This reminds me of the time I let my Driver's License lapse. It happens. We move on. I realize that there are easy, online avenues for renewal, but I'm not taking that route. I've decided to retake the test for a couple reasons:
1) I want to make sure my knowledge is still up to par withOUT an open book.
2) I want to see if the test has evolved.
Mostly what I'm concerned about are METARs, Airport signage and Sectional Charts. While I definitely feel that some knowledge of the latter is beneficial to UAV pilots, my feelings on the former two are much different. I don't think there is more useless knowledge for a UAV pilot than airport signage (a place we're not even supposed to be within 5 miles of) and METARs. Like any normal human, I just need to know if it's going to be cloudy, rainy, too cold, too hot and/or too windy. All 5 points of data are easily garnered from the Internet in minutes. In my 10+ years of UAV piloting, I've yet to even look at a single METAR, and have never flown at or near an Airport. And honestly, though I value my Sectional Chart knowledge, I've honestly utilized less than half of what I was forced to learn the first time around. I never fly in Class C, there are no Class B airports in my state, I sometimes fly near Class D, which sometimes turns into Class E or G at a given time of day. I know when to look for military training corridors, but I have honestly encountered low-flying F-16's miles from any such corridor. Talk about a pucker factor, but I digress...
Regarding Sectional Charts, what I am mostly concerned about are flight paths, glide slopes, restricted areas, etc. And, of course I always check NOTAM's for TFR's and other pertinent information. This knowledge has severed me very well over the past decade. All that said...
I'm curious to know if the Part 107 has evolved at all. Does the test still include test questions regarding METARs and Airport Signage? How about Sectional Charts? I kind of assume that there will be Sectional Chart questions, but my hopes are that METARs and Airport Signage test questions have gone by way of the Dodo.
Thanx in advance for any help you can give.
