Trying to connect Slave remote

I just got a new I1 remote. I set up the remote that is now connected to the I1 as master and the new one as slave. The master is on 1.5.8 and the new remote is on 1.7 something. the scan wouldn't find the remote. I imaging they both have to be on the same firmware. Right now everything is working on the Inspire. the Inspire is on 1.6.00.40
the rc is 1.5.8
and the camera is 1.7.00.90

Can I update the remote to 1.7 and what problems will that cause. Should I update all the firmware to current?

upgraded the firmware on the I1 then the remote and was able to connect the slave remote not problem, really works nice.
