Can't view video files

First day I've had a chance to fly was today. I came home, expected to view the videos, and couldn't. They were saved as MP4 files. All pertinent info was there, but basic Windows viewer couldn't view them.
Questions:
What do I need just to view the files? My assumption is that the windows player can't read 4K. I know I could have filmed at 1080P, but that's not why I got this quad. I've got Power Director 12. Am I going to have to process them through that just to view them?

My big screen tv has an SD card reader that has always been able to read HD videos (go pro/previous phantoms), but couldn't open the files either.
I'm fairly knowledgable, but this has me stumped. Any help is appreciated.

You probably do not have the correct video codec on your computer.

If you do not have the right codec, the computer don´t know what kind of file you want it to read.
It´s like a translation-tool for your computer.

MP4 is most common with "QuickTime". Use Google and download, then you should have no problems..
