Smooth Shots: Litchi vs. Autopilot vs. ???

Can you create grid waypoint missions with fpvcamera? Docs/url? Thank you

If there is one thing that I have learned from this thread is that I need to step outside of DJI. I have been flying manually with a remote operated for the gimbal. These apps may free up some room in my budgets. Thanks to all who have contributed.

If you are shooting stills you do not need an app such as autopilot. You can just hover, frame your shot and shoot. Pretty easy.

If you are shooting video you will find it takes a good deal of skill to be smooth. Each time you change heading altitude, etc. it destroys the smooth flow. While you can set expo and other settings to reduce the jerkiness of the shot it is very difficult to make it smooth. In post I will edit out these movements using short clips between these movements and put these clips back together. Not an ideal solution.

With something like autopilot it will compute the smooth flow and transition smoothly from one waypoint to another. It can use what is call Bézier Curves to smooth transitions from waypoint to waypoint. All of this results in a video that has a smooth and natural flow that would be virtually impossible to achieve by hand flying a video. You are able to define what is called focal points and while flying a predefined path it can keep the camera focus on the focal point while you fly around it or fly by it. It can even smoothly transition from one focal point to another along your path. IMHO autopilot, or something similar, is a must for shooting quality video.

One of the advantage is that you can design your flight at home and even simulate the flight so that you can determine flight time and what the drone and camera is doing along the path. When done go to the site and let your drone fly it and get what you want on the first attempt. If you want to refine it on site you can tweak it and fly it again.

While autopilot is not a simple app you may find that the other apps out there do not do everything you would like. You are probably better off taking the time to learn autopilot rather than learn a lesser app and then find you want more features.
