RTH didn't work

I was out yesterday with my I1 Pro and at around 300ft distance and 100f altitude approx, I tapped RTH and it started to decend into a landing exactly where it was, which was above a load of trees!!
I quickly cancelled it and flew back manually to my landing zone.
My RTH height was 40m and I always double set the home point after doing a compass calibration and had over 16 sats.

Any ideas?

What is your RTH behaviour set to in the app?

Additionally, I wouldn't compass calibrate every time unless you want to lose your aircraft.
Calibrate it and simply check the mod values during preflight checks (lots about that on the forum).
Calibrating each time is a recipe for disaster.
