Nice work, I bet that system costs a bunch more that the wooden poles! What do you call that effect that splits the video in half?

Not an "effect" some call it a diamond cut. It's a AE templet, or you can take the time to build it yourself in AE. VideoHive & Pond5 has lot's of them!

There are a lot of third party transitions like this for AE & FCP X.

Hahaha! They have mixed reviews. Many have loved them, but my wife, like you, said they were painful to watch.
